Abstract

For two centuries scholars have sought to discover the historical Jesus. Presently such scholarship is dominated not by the question 'Who was Jesus?' but rather 'How do we even go about answering the question, "Who was Jesus?"?' With this current situation in mind, Jonathan Bernier undertakes a two-fold task: one, to engage on the level of the philosophy of history with existing approaches to the study of the historical Jesus, most notably the criteria approach and the social memory approach; two, to work with the critical realism developed by Bernard Lonergan, introduced into New Testament studies by Ben F. Meyer, and advocated by N.T. Wright in order to develop a philosophy of history that can elucidate current debates within historical Jesus studies

Abstract

Containing essays about the historicity of discourse from the fields of linguistics, literary studies, and the social sciences, this volume documents the multidisciplinary nature of discourse analysis. The essays examine the historical relativity of language usage, communicative intentions, and their impact on humanistic theory formation along with the historical dimensions of political communication and the discursivity of literary forms.

Abstract

This volume contains 19 essays by Petr Pokorný that provide a unique overview of Jesus research and early Christology. The author presents case studies dealing with the problem of the relationship between the first and early Christian christologies and the Jesus of history. They also examine Jesus research’s theological basis and its relationship with systematic theology and philosophy as well as the methodology of critical Jesus research. Other essays answer individual questions on Jesus of Nazareth’s relationship to John the Baptist, how Jesus related to Paul, and the language of the oldest traditions concerning Jesus. Furthermore, the author explores the Sermon on the Mount and its inner ethics structure, the Passion narrative, and how Jesus’ role is presented in each of the gospels and non-Christian testimonies.

Abstract

This volume provides a comprehensive, accessible introduction to the Gospel of Mark, now widely considered the first recorded treatment of Jesus. Darrell Bock explains how this text, once the least-used gospel, came to be regarded as the starting point for understanding Jesus. Drawing together previous arguments and discussion in a constructive summary, he traces the significance of Mark and addresses key features such as its cultural and historical background, its narrative flow, and the role of Greek in supplying meaning. This commentary highlights the issues Mark's gospel raises and develops Mark's message surrounding Jesus' claims of kingdom authority and salvation, the call to disciples to follow him, and the preparation of those disciples to face suffering in light of their choice. Mark will be a valuable resource for students, teachers, and pastors alike.
